News from the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology annual scientific meeting. Looking at a sample of 57,000 children and 57,000 adults they found that a positive family history of cancer increases your risk of childhood asthma by 60%. In previous studies, they have looked at personal history of cancer and the relationship with asthma, atopic dermatitis and seasonal allergies. They found that the relationship of cancer and childhood asthma is connected not only in the same person but they are connected across generations.
In order to determine if the connection of childhood asthma and cancer is a new issue that is the result of how standard medicine treats childhood asthma with stronger and stronger immune suppressing medications in modern times, we will need to retrospectively look back at records 50 to 100 years ago to see if the same connection is found in people with cancer back in the days before the mega strong immune suppression asthma treatments used over the past 50 years. It is well known that these immune suppressing medicines used in asthma and many other common chronic illnesses increasing with modern Americans, have increased risks of cancer. But this new study is actually looking at the reverse, cancer in the family is a risk for asthma. Very interesting.
The summary point is: All doctors and healthcare workers need to be more vigilant with screening for asthma and atopic dermatitis in children with a family history of cancer. We need to find better more naturopathic ways to treat both cancer and asthma to break the cycle of disease.
At Amber Life Clinic in Latvia we have an integrative immunologist on staff that can help people with these type of risk factors. At Family Wellness Centre we have a multi fellowship board certified integrative medicine doctor to help with these type of issues.
