Too often, treatments for neck and back pain involve prescription drugs or invasive surgery. At Family Wellness Centre in Freeport, The Bahamas, we offer spinal decompression as just one of many non-invasive chiropractic techniques and regenerative medicine treatments that can alleviate pain and improve flexibility.
How Effective Are Spinal Decompression Treatments?
There are many clinical reviews that highlight the effectiveness of this treatment. In 1997, a study published in the American Journal of Pain Management showed that 86% of patients treated with decompression achieved good relief from their pain.
In another study published in Orthopedic Technology Review in 2003, 86% of patients saw immediate relief and 84% were free of all pain for three months after decompression. Physical examinations showed marked improvements in 92% of the participants, and those improvements remained for the vast majority for the next three months.
These are just two studies on the subject, but they are backed up by our experience at Family Wellness Centre. We offer spinal decompression precisely because we understand just how effective it is in offering our patients real pain relief. It also works well in combination with other treatments we can offer, and the first step to your wellness is talking with us about treatment options.
What Is Spinal Decompression?
When decompression is performed by a qualified medical professional like Dr. Kevin Bethel MD at the Family Wellness Centre, it can often prevent any need for surgery. There is such a thing as “surgical spinal decompression,” but the treatment we offer is different.
This treatment involves using a special table to gently stretch your spine or neck. This stretching relieves the pressure that is on the nerves, and the whole treatment is carefully designed to fit your unique needs. We assess your precise situation and use just the right amount of force to get you relief. In decompression, the key is creating a negative intradiscal pressure so fluids and nutrients can flow freely through the area and pressure is relieved.
FAQ About Decompression
What Can It Treat?
This is a great treatment for herniated discs and can be used for relieving neck and back pain or treating:
- Degenerative disc disease
- Damaged joints in the spine
- Headaches from disc issues
- Spinal injuries
- Effects of chronic poor posture
There are some conditions it can’t help with, such as infection in the spine, pain from tumors, broken vertebrae, or pain coming from artificial discs or other implants. If any of these are an issue for you, come talk to us about other treatments that can help you get the relief you need.
Am I a Candidate for Treatment?
The only way to know for sure if you’re a good candidate for this treatment is to talk with us. We can evaluate your concerns and goals and help you choose the right treatment to stop the pain.
There are no known risks to this treatment, and there are only a few conditions that could actually prevent you from getting a decompression treatment. If you have osteoporosis, have had back surgery in the past, have had a spinal fusion, take blood thinners, or are pregnant, we may need to help you find another way to relieve your pain.
Does It Hurt?
The process of decompression is not painful, and most people feel at least some relief immediately after their very first treatment!
What Other Treatments Can You Offer?
At Family Wellness Centre, we offer expert and comprehensive chiropractic care with personalized treatment plans for you. We can also refer you to other health care specialists if needed.
More importantly, we tailor your treatment to achieve whole-body wellness: not just temporary relief of pain without improved function. That means we don’t resort to medications that simply mask pain. In addition to offering spinal manipulation and decompression, we can also offer:
- Customized nutritional programs that reduce inflammation
- Advanced kinesiology adjustments
- Acupuncture and acupressure
- Functional fitness exercises
- Bio-feedback energy medicine therapies
- Regenerative medicine therapies and treatments
How Long Does It Take?
At your initial consultation, we’ll take plenty of time to get to know you, but each spinal decompression session takes around a half-hour. We can cover the specifics and your unique situation in consultation.
Is This the Same as Traction Therapy?
Traction and decompression have some things in common, but they are not the same thing. Traction therapy merely tugs on the body, but decompression creates a negative pressure that allows the healing process to begin. Traction alone can actually make things worse and create more pain if it moves muscles in a way that creates more pressure on a disc.
How Frequently Will I Need Treatment?
Most people have between four and ten sessions to get full relief, and the timing between treatments will be something you decide in consultation with us. Once your discs are treated and you have relief from the pressure, that length of time you experience relief will depend on your condition.
If you have a degenerative condition, it may eventually come back. If you suffered an injury, you can expert permanent relief if you do not re-injure the area. If you have been suffering due to poor posture or other lifestyle issues, correcting those lifestyle issues will keep your results permanent.
