If you have done my online survey for natural disaster survival and you feel that you may need help with anything mentioned in the survey. We are here to help. Especially if you are having thoughts of hurting yourself or other people…Please reach out to someone, a friend or pastor or doctor.
The reason I am doing this survey is because most of the medical research regarding PTSD is in relation to traumatic events like a terrorist attack, or a train crash, an aggravated assault or military combat. Very little, next to no research, has been done to validate the screening for PTSD with survivors of natural disasters. This survey will be some of the first research on PTSD for natural disaster survivors.
Likewise, I have some questions about treatment options for stress and PTSD in the survey. Cannabidiol use is reported to get some relief for PTSD symptoms. There is not enough science research on the role Cannabinoids (CBD) can have for people living with PTSD symptoms. Even if you don’t score high enough to be diagnosed with PTSD, the truth is, who wants to live with any single one of those symptoms? Even if the only symptom since the storm is “trouble sleeping” then I want to know if you have that symptom. I want to know if CBD has helped that symptom. It may not take the symptom away completely, but did it help lessen the symptom?
There is not much research on treatment for PTSD in general. What I can tell you is that people who have long term PTSD usually have what I call a symptom SENSITIZING event (let us call it hurricane #1), followed by a symptom INITIATING event (hurricane #2), and then a symptom PRECIPITATING event (hurricane #3). The best cognitive therapy to treat long term PTSD must address all three stages of the development of true PTSD.
Sadly, in the northern Bahamas we have passed 3 major hurricanes in the past 20 years by multiples of three. Some years we even had 3 major storms hit the same island in one year. I admit that I am at my breaking point. This research is one of the ways that I am coping with this stress. I am determined to find the silver linings on this monster storm. This research will be one of those silver linings for all us survivors! It will help the world medical community be better prepared for next time disaster strikes.
